지금은 한국에 박물관이 많이 생겼지만 그래도 국립중앙 박물관이 가장크고 볼 것도 많을것이다.  한국에서 선교사업을 할 때에도 몇번 갔지만 이번에도 들렸다.  태조 이성계의 초상화를 전시한다해서 다시 들렸다.  갈 때마다 새로운 것을 배우고 역사공부를 할 수 있는 좋은 기회이고 묵던 미군부대에서 가깝기도 했다.  근처의 풍경도 가을맛을 느끼게 하는 좋은 쉼터였다. 

There are many museums in Korea now but still the National Museum in Seoul is the biggest and has most to see.  I visited few times before but I went again to see the first king of the Josun dynasty, Tae-Jo.  The ground was a perfect place for rest in the perfect fall color.  

사람을 하도 많이 죽인 사람이라 더 무섭게 생겼을 줄 알았는데...

Somehow I thought he would look a lot meaner for killing so many people to get the power...

한국은 국가의 명을 정하는데도 중국의 허락이 있어야 했으니...

서울이 많이 변했지만 어느 곳은 변한 곳과 옛날 모습이 공존하는 곳도 많은데 그중에 한군데가 청계천 인듯 하다.  서울의 하수도가 모여 흘렀던 곳, 그래서 콘크리트로 덮기도 했던 곳.  그래도 여전히 더럽고 지저분한 곳 근처에 한국에서 가장 바쁜 평화시장과 가장 오래된 재래시장인 광장시장이 공존하던곳.  그곳이 정말 못 알아 보게 변했다.  이명박씨가 서울 시장인 시절 콘크리트를 걷어내고 깨끗한 물이 흐르는 산책로로 성공적으로 바꾸고나서 대통령에 당선됐다고들 한다.  지금은 바쁜 광화문에서 시작해서 평화시장지나가는 아주 걷기좋은 가쁜 숨을 돌릴수 있는 곳이 된 것이 참 다행이다. 

Seoul has changed so much over the years and some places you could still see old and new next to each other.  One place is Chung-Gye-Chun right next to the busiest textile market in Korea and one of the oldest traditional maarkets.  It used to be central sweage place for running sweage right in the middle of the city.  It was covered with concrete but you could still smell raw sweage all the time.  It changed dramatically by the former president Lee while he was the Seoul’s mayor.  Some say that is how he got elected.  Many people enjoys respite right in the middle of one of the busiest city in the world. 

우리가 클 때도 점보는 집이 많았겠지만 지금은 타로라는 점을 보는 집이 어디가나 있는 것이 신기했다.  젊은 사람들이 많이 본다고 하는데 취업이 어려운 것을 반영하는 것 같다.  절이면서 점을 보는 곳도 많고, 남산에는 카지노도 보였다.  사람들이 의지를 할 곳이 없는 것 같아서 안타깝다.  

그런 중에도 전철안이나 전철역에서 팬들이 자기가 좋아하는 연예인들의 생일을 축하하는 포스터를 많은 돈을 주고 붙쳐놓은 것도 보였다.  왜 그런지 정말 외로운 사람들이 많다고 생각이 드는 것은 내가 늙은 탓일까?

I am sure there were fortune tellers while I was growing up but these days I saw on the main street where a lot of young people gather.  There were also many Buddhist temples advertise for fortune telling.  The economy is not good in Korea right now especially for young people.  I also saw a casino....

But on the walls of subway stations and on the subway trains itself, I saw many posters congratulating young entertainers birthdays paid by their fans.  Why do I thought there were so many lonely people in Korea?  I must be getting old...

한국은 시월이면 날씨가 좋을 것을 예상하지만 올해는 태풍도 지나가고 비가 두세번 왔는데 우산없이 비를 맞고 다닌 사람은 나 밖에는 없을 것이다.  덥고 가문 여름이 지나고 수확할 시기에 온 비라서 농사에는 많은 피해를 주었다고 한다.  그래도 도시에서는 별로 지장없이 다닐 수 있어서 좋았다.  별다른 목적없이 다니는 여행자의 맛을 아주 제대로 보았다고나 할까?

One can expect good weather in October for Korea but we had a typhoon and couple of rainy days.  Because the summer was hot and dry and the rainy in the harvest time was not welcomed.  But as a traveler in a city without any agenda, I had no problem enjoying my trip.

내가 한국에 살 때 가장 자주 가던 곳 중에 하나가 남산에 있는 남산도서관 일 것이다.  학교에도 도서관이 있었지만 책을 도서관에서만 볼 수 있는데다가 책들도 그렇게 많지는 않은 것 같다.  시간이 나면 남산도서관을 가곤 했는데 책을 얼마나 읽었는지는 모르겠지만 그저 책들과 있는 것만으로도 만족했던 것 같다.  40년 넘어 가본 도서관은 전혀 다른 기분이었고 주위는 정말 산책하기 좋은 곳으로 정리되서 있었다.  한국 사람이라면 한 번씩 들려보라고 권장하고 싶다.  

One of my favorite places to visit while I was growing up in Seoul was the Nam-San Public library.  There were not too many libraries back then and our school had a small library but did not have too many books and I could not check out any book.  I don"t think I read too many books in the Nam-San library but I enjoyed just being around the books.  The new modern library was good but the surrounding area was very well kept and beautiful.

한국에 가면 무엇을 하느냐고 묻는 사람들이 많다.  나는 그저 아무 것도 않하고 내가 가고 싶은 곳에 가고 싶은 때에 가서 먹고 싶은 것을 먹기만 할 수 있다면 족하다고 하지만, 시월의 한국은 날씨가 좋아서 갈 곳도, 볼 것도 많다.  4 주간 한국에서 머무는 동안 거의 3 주를 서울에서 보내고, 나머지는 광주와 청주를 다녀왔는데도 한 두 달 더 머물수 있었더라면 하는 아쉬움이 남았다....

Most of Koreans asked me what I would do while I was in Korea.  If I could go to where I want to go, when I want to go and eat what I want to eat, that would be enough for me.  The month October is always the perfect month to travel in Korea for the perfect weather and a lot to see.  I spent almost 3 weeks in Seoul and a brief visit to Kwang-Ju and Cheong-Song but I wish I had a month or two more....  

작은 언니랑 수원에서 만나서 점심을 먹고 수원에 있는 작은 성을 방문했는데, 점심식사에 번데기가 반찬으로 나와서 얼마나 잘 먹었는지....  한국사람들도 잘 안먹는 그런 음식이 좋으니 그런 이유로 아직도 한국이 그리운 것 같다.  며칠후에 언니랑 다시 만나서 버스를 두시간이나 타고 강원도를 가서 다시 버스를 타고 섬을 한바퀴 돌고 다시 두시간을 타고 오고....  그러면서 옛날 이야기를 많이 했는데, 작은 언니는 유난히 기억이 좋아서 정말 재미있는 이야기를 많이 듣는 기회가 되었다...

My older sister and I took two hour bus ride to Gang-Hwa island, took another one hour bus ride to go around the island and took the two hour ride back....  My sister had a remarkable memory for not only the incidents but names and dates as well.  It is simply amazing.  we had a lot of fun, about learning about the olden times.
