도미니카 공화국에 온지도 벌써 한 달이 넘었다. 12월 달에 왔으니 겨울인데도 한국의 초여름처럼 덥고 후덥지근 하지만 그래도 아침, 저녁으로 바람이 불면 조금은 선선하기도 하다. 미국에서 와서 사는 사람들도 춥다고 하는데 나는 여전히 덥다. 이 나라는 고구마 같이 생긴 섬나라로 2/3

은 하이티 공화국인데 하이티 공화국이 오랫동안 침략도 하고 점령도 했어서 서로 감정들이 좋지 않다.
지금은 도미니카 공화국이 조금 더 잘 살아서 많은 사람들이 하이티에서 불법으로 입국을 한단다. 하이티 사람들은 지금도 불어를 쓰는데 합법적으로 이나라로 이민와서 오래 산 사람들도 불어를 고집한다고 한다. 그래서 감정이 더 안 좋은 것 같다. 어쩐지 한국과 일본 이야기를 하는 것 같다. 가장 가까우면서도 오랫동안 적국이었던 역사는 우리만이 아닌 듯 하다. 우리는 성전에서 가까운 아파트의 9층에 사는데 전망을 좋지만 교통이 복잡하고 많이 시끄럽기도 하다.
We have been in the Dominica Republic over a month now. We came in January which is their winter but it is still hot and muggy like early summer in Korea. However, some mornings there is breeze which makes it cool and pleasant and some Americans say it is too cool. The country is an island shaped like a sweet potato. The 2/3 on the right is the Dominican Republic and the 1/3 on the left is the Haiti Republic. The Haiti Republic used to attach the DR and even occupied the country some time, so their feeling are still hostile in many ways.
These days the DR's economy is better than Haiti so many people emigrate from Haiti illegally. And even many those people who came to country legally still insist speaking French and I think that deepens the hostility. It reminds me of Korea and Japan. They are the closest countries but the worst enemies at time. We live very close to the Santo Domingo temple on the 9th floor. The street in front of our apartment is very busy and always noisy...

불꽃놀이를 할때마다 발코니덕을 톡톡히본다. 성전도 자주 볼수 있다
We really enjoy the balcony especially during the fire works. We have the view of the temple.
겨울이라 그런지 대개는 남편 혼자 수영장을 즐긴다.
Maybe because it is winter. Dan is the only person who enjoys the pool most of the days.
